I am a science writer, freelance and otherwise, in Columbus, Ohio.

Experience

For my day job, I cover research in the mathematical and physical sciences and engineering at Ohio State University. While I usually write about physics, astronomy, chemistry, geology, math, statistics, and any number of engineering specialties, I occasionally write about other things, such as psychology and marketing. I’ve also covered cancer research for Frontiers, a magazine for the cancer programs at Ohio State.

As a freelancer, I’m a columnist for the magazine Computing in Science and Engineering, and I recently wrote a feature for New Scientist. Click here to see some of my clips.

Before joining my Ohio State colleagues in 1996, I edited the newsletter Advanced Manufacturing Technology, now published by Frost & Sullivan. Since then, I’ve edited another F&S newsletter, High Tech Materials. My work has appeared in The Sciences, the magazine for the New York Academy of Sciences; Science World, a Scholastic, Inc. magazine for junior-high students, and 21stC: The World of Research at Columbia University. I often freelance for scientific societies, including the American Physical Society, American Chemical Society, and IEEE.

Education

I graduated from Ohio State with a B.S. in physics with emphasis on astronomy in 1993, and in 1995, received an M.A. from New York University’s Science and Environmental Reporting Program, the first program of its kind in the country. I’m a member of the National Association of Science Writers and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
