More about me

I once dreamed of being an astronomer, but let’s just say
I’m a much better writer than scientist. I credit my new
direction in life to  astronomy professor Donald Terndrup,
who encouraged me to write; my boss, Earle Holland, whose
science reporting course taught me how to do so; and a chance
encounter with American Astronomical Society press officer
Stephen Maran, who showed me that I could indulge my love
of astronomy while earning a living as a writer.

I graduated from Ohio State with a B.S. in physics with emphasis on astronomy
and earned an M.A. from New York University’s Science and Environmental Reporting Program.

Before returning to Ohio State in 1996, I edited the newsletter Advanced Manufacturing Technology, now published by Frost & Sullivan. Today I write news releases, freelance features — mainly for scientific societies, including the American Physical Society, American Chemical Society, and IEEE — and a couple of science and health blogs. I’m a member of the National Association of Science Writers and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
